1001 Untouchable
Styles
As told by DJ Owns
the founder...
So I get asked alot about just what the
1001 Untouchable Styles we have are. Not having a good
answer to this question, I've since devised a witty
reply, in which I say we only really have six, but it
just doesn't have the same ring that one thousand and
one has now does it? The reality is, it's something
I thought up back in high school. I was trying to clean
my educational act up around the same time I got into
break dancing, and was trying to organize a crew for
my friends and I travel as. Anyways, since I was getting
my life a bit more organized, I was consistently going
to bed around 10pm, and would always see the clock hit
10:01 every night. At the same time, I was listening
to a lot of music from Styles of Beyond, a really talented
hip hop group, and I thought up the name "1001
Untouchable Styles" as sort of a mashup of the
two. In a nutshell, it meant we got tons of shit you
don't have. Gotta love the posturing mentality of hip
hop. I never used it, and no one wound up being as motivated
as myself at breakdancing. Breakdancing alone lost my
intrest, and that just sort of fell to the way side
years ago. Years later, I moved to Portland, and thing
just fell into place.
1001 Untouchable Styles really isn't about
us having "shit" that others don't. It's just
a cool name I thought up years ago, that stuck. It's
a dj crew and production group that I run, that is just
an organized name for what I love to do. It's good times,
with good people. So, when we bring a DJ onboard, it's
not just cause they're good. We know good DJ's who are
worthless people, and we wouldn't even give them the
time of day. Our DJ's are good people and good DJ's.
I respect them, and I want to share my hard work with
them, and I appreciate the hard work they share with
myself, and everyone around them.
We're not here to conquer the planet.
We're not here to steal your lunch money either, although
sometimes I could use a free lunch. We're here because
we love the music, we love the people, and we love what
we do. If we were in it for the money we'd have quit
years ago when we realized a single turntable cost $400,
which equates to more money than many of us will ever
see in our DJ career. That is also not even a third
of the financial investment involved in all of this,
alongside the time invested. Lord knows how long it
took us to acquire both the knowledge, skill, and money
to get a sound system together.
So thats what we're about. Thats why our
music is free, and why we've been doing events for years.
We've been through the death of our music industry in
the region, it's revival, and we'll probably still be
around if it dies again. Another important thing that
I definitely have to say, is that although I named this
crew, and brought about it's inception, I did not make
it is what it is today by myself. A lot of people have
helpd over the years. A lot of doubters also turned
their noses to what we did, and a lot of people stood
beside myself and everyone else involved, and really
helped push this through, in the faith that it would
be something more than just another "ravey rockstar"
group of arrogant assholes.
So, now that you know a little bit more about us, some
thanks are certaintly in store. These are in no particular
order, and some people may be forgotten, as there is
just so many people who have contributed over the years
to 1001US. If you've helped us become what we are today,
and are not mentioned, you are forgotten only in mind,
not in heart.
